York Region moves ahead with $4.2 billion 2024 budget
 
York Regional Council approved the $4.2 billion budget for 2024, which includes a tax levy increase of 2.75% and a 1% Rapid Transit / Infrastructure levy. Regional Council also endorsed the outlook for the remaining two years of the current multi-year budget: 2.60% and a continuation of the 1% Rapid Transit / Infrastructure levy in both 2025 and 2026.

The $4.2 billion budget is comprised of $3.2 billion in operating costs and $1 billion in capital expenditures, with 82 cents of every Regional property tax dollar funding program and service delivery.

 

York Region's multi-year budget aligns with the Region’s Strategic Plan, emphasizing priorities during Council's four-year term. The budget supports these priorities, with each department using it to guide spending.

Due to the increasing break-and-enter incidents, car thefts, and carjacking cases recently, Regional Councillor Alan Ho requested the York Regional Police to update the installation of cameras at major intersections to monitor and record the passing of cars for further investigations should there be crime take place at the York Regional meeting held on December 7.

 

The York Regional Police Chief has agreed to initiate a pilot program and will discuss with the Privacy Commissioner to address the privacy issue.

Markham Announces New Economic Development and Culture Strategy

 

The City of Markham announced the release of Markham is More – the City’s new Economic Development and Culture Strategy (2023 to 2027). The Strategy lays out an important roadmap that will guide the City and its collaboration with community partners to grow Markham’s economy on a foundation of arts, culture, and innovation.

York Region Transit (YRT) is offering free transit to travellers on New Year’s Eve after 7 p.m. and is extending late-night service to get you to and from your celebrations safely.

 

1. Beginning Sunday, January 7, 2024, the schedules for TTC 17A – Birchmount, TTC 68B – Warden and TTC 129A – McCowan North will be adjusted to better match customer demand.

 

2. Effective Sunday, January 7, 2024, there will be schedule and platform adjustments for Viva purple/Viva purple A, Viva yellow and Route 2 – Milliken, respectively. 

 

3.Effective Monday, January 8, 2024, Route 26 – Maple will be restructured to provide two-way service north of Major Mackenzie Drive.

 

New for 2024: Earn free rides by paying with PRESTO

Enjoy York Region Transit (YRT) monthly pass benefits without having to pay in advance! Starting Monday, January 1, 2024, travellers can ride YRT for free after trips for adults, 39 trips for youth or 28 trips for seniors and children every calendar month through YRT’s new fare capping program.

York Region has completed a municipal class Environmental Assessment Study for improvements to Kennedy Road from Major Mackenzie Drive to Elgin Mills Road in the City of Markham. 

 

The ESR will be available for review and download at york.ca/WardenKennedyStudy beginning Thursday, December 14, 2023 for a 45-day review period.
