As per the resident's suggestion and my office's request, York Region staff conducted a northbound left turn traffic study at Woodbine Avenue and Markland Street / Calvert Road during the peak period. As a result of the study, new northbound and southbound advance left turn signals are recommended to be installed to improve the signal operations at this intersection.

York Region is improving McCowan Road from June to July 2024. Temporary overnight road closures are required to replace two culverts on July 8 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and July 9 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

York Region recognizes that well-maintained, attractive roads are very important to our residents. Each spring, our team of Transportation Maintenance Workers is busy cleaning and repairing regional roads and boulevards.
 

The 2024 Summer Beach Water Testing Program begins June 17 and runs until the end of August. York Region Public Health regularly monitors the water quality at designated public beaches.

York Region Transit (YRT) fare changes will take effect on Monday, July 1, 2024

 

In December 2023, York Regional Council approved the 2024 budget which includes a 3% annual transit fare increase effective July 1, 2024. This is the first fare increase since 2019 and will help to address the rising costs of running the transit system.

Markham Scholarship From Friendship, Music, and Cancer
 

The Kevin Doherty Scholarship will award one student pursuing digital creativity in either arts, design, development, or marketing with a one-time award of $1,500 towards their academic post-secondary studies. This scholarship was born from a 35-year-long Markham friendship of two entrepreneurs who met in high school. Kevin Doherty & George Arabian felt compelled to create this annual scholarship for creative youth in Markham to honour his lifelong friend. The scholarship has been awarded yearly since it was founded in 2020.

The annual Terry Fox Run has become a classic Canadian tradition every fall with more than 650 diverse communities across the country coming together to fundraise for cancer research. 
 
Register and join on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at the Old Unionville Library Community Centre (15 Library Lane, Unionville) to honour Terry Fox and his legacy for cancer research.

The Terry Fox Run has a rich history in Markham-Unionville starting in 1982 with 100 participants. Over the years, the Markham Unionville participants have raised over $1.5 million dollars for the Marathon of Hope.  Last year raised over $80,000!

Attending the 2024 FCM (Federation of Canadian Municipalities) Conference and Trade Show in Alberta, Calgary and get ready to participate in various programs - Redefining Our Future.
Joined a study tour of the River Pathway System and Flood Barrier for the Bow River in Calgary. The barrier length is 1.4 km, cost $110m in 2016, in response to a big flood occurred in 2013, $250k higher due to inflation.
Free Light Railway Transit (LRT) is available at downtown Calgary to promote public transit. Outside of the Free Fare Zone passengers are charged $3.75 per single trip. Hope to see similar policy taking place in downtown Markham by means of Autonomous Electric Vehicles soon.
Service provider brought in e-Scooter fleet to downtown Calgary to help solve the first-and-last mile commute by charging an affordable rate of $1.15 unlock rate plus $0.42/min. Believe the City of Markham can take advantage of this application
