WINTER 2021 e-Newsletter   |    FEBRUARY 28, 2021

Dear Residents,

How are you all doing? As you know, York Region has returned to the COVID-19 Response Framework at the Red-Control level and is no longer subject to the Stay-at-Home order.

Gathering limits for organized public events and social gatherings under RED-CONTROL Zone are as follows:

  • Indoor: 5 people maximum

  • Outdoor: 25 people maximum (while keeping a safe distance)

  • Weddings, funerals, religious services: 30% capacity of the room indoors or 100 people outdoors (while keeping a safe distance)

An individual who lives alone (household of one) may also gather solely with one other household.

The strengthened measures for RED-CONTROL Zone under the revised Provincial COVID-19 response framework include:

  • Capacity limits of:

    • 75% for supermarkets and other stores that primarily sell groceries, convenience stores, pharmacies

    • 50% for all other retail, including discount and big box retailers, liquor stores, hardware stores and garden centres

    • Stores must post their capacity limit publicly

    • Stores must have passive screening for patrons (for example, posting signs outside the store front about not entering if you have COVID-19 symptoms)

    • Indoor malls must actively screen their customers before they enter the mall (for example, by using the patron screening tool)

    • Stores within malls are required to follow appropriate retail measures

While this is some positive news, we strongly urge residents not to travel between regions as several new and infectious strains of COVID-19 have been detected in Ontario.

Furthermore, effective Monday, March 1, 2021 at 08:00am, York Region residents age 80 years of age and older (born in 1941 or earlier) can book an appointment for their COVID-19 vaccination by visiting york.ca/COVID19Vaccine

York Region Public Health is working with our local health-care partners to provide COVID-19 vaccines for this newly eligible priority group at three locations:

  • Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, 3200 Major MacKenzie Dr W, Vaughan, ON L6A 4Z3, operated by Mackenzie Health
  • Cornell Community Centre, 3201 Bur Oak Ave, Markham, ON L6B 0T2,  operated by Eastern York Region North Durham (EYRND) Ontario Health Team (OHT)
  • Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, 100 Eagle St W, Newmarket, ON L3Y 1J4, operated by Southlake Regional Health Centre

You can also check out the provincial vaccination distribution program here. We are currently in Phase 1.

I'd like to also inform you that under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, it is the employer's responsibility to take all precautions reasonable in the circumstances to protect workers from being hurt or getting a work-related illness.

If you are an employer, it’s important to have a plan for how you will protect against COVID-19 transmission in your workplace. This will help businesses across Ontario to stay safe and open, and help your employees feel safe while providing services to customers.

All businesses operating during a shutdown or lockdown MUST have a safety plan by law.

Employers are required to actively screen every worker before they enter the workplace at the start of their shift as described in the COVID-19 Screening Tool for Workplaces issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

You can visit here or our city website to learn how to develop a safety plan and for additional resources. Depending on your sector, there are specific steps you should take to protect yourself and your workers. Use these resources to refine your workplace safety plan. You don’t have to submit your plan to the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, but creating one can help you make your workplace safer for everyone. During an inspection of your workplace, an inspector could ask whether you have developed a safety plan and may ask to see it.  I have attached a sample screening form and workplace safety plan for your reference.

Yours Sincerely,

Alan Ho
