York Regional Council:

Update: Regional's no right on red (NROR)

York Region staff are studying intersections where no right turn on red signal measures were implemented and exploring options to reduce delays for motorists while continuing to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

Given the success in reducing collisions and conflicts at the four pilot intersections in 2019, it was recommended to implement the measures at additional signalized intersections.

In 2022, a no-right-on-red signal safety measure was implemented at these intersections:

  • Kennedy Road at The Bridle Trail (Markham)
  • Kennedy Road at Carlton Road (Markham)
  • 16th Avenue and Woodbine Avenue (Markham)
  • 16th Avenue and Main Street Markham (Markham)
  • Highway 7 and Martin Grove Road (Vaughan)
  • Highway 7 and McCowan Road (Markham)
  • Highway 7 and Kennedy Road (Markham)
  • McCowan Road and Carlton Road/Raymerville Drive (Markham)

Additional safety measures coming to the above intersections in 2023 include:

  • No right-on-red signal time of day operation
  • Left turn signal implementation
  • Pedestrian head start
  • Additional warning signage

York Region reflects the heritage, history, and identity of its residents, including its community of Chinese diaspora. Working with community partners, the York Region District School Board, and students from the University of Toronto's Museum Studies program, Markham Museum will be creating a virtual and traveling exhibition that explores the history of Chinese immigration to York Region.

This exhibition will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1923), a racist piece of Canadian legislation. Despite this history, many Chinese Canadians settled in York Region. They brought with them their rich culture, traditions and knowledge. This exhibit celebrates the Chinese-Canadian community, through the themes of home and belonging.

If you are interested in getting involved in this project, please contact us at researchfacility@markham.ca .

We are currently looking for oral history interview participants and the loaning of artifacts/records for the in-person exhibition

(opening September 2023 at Markham Museum).

The online exhibit is launching May 2023 via the YRDSB website.
