A special weather statement for parts of Alectra Utilities’ service territory has been issued due to a forecasted ice and snowstorm.
This storm could potentially cause power outages as well as damage to powerlines. Areas with trees located near wires should take extra precautions as fallen limbs that contact power lines could cause extended outages in affected areas.
In the event of downed powerlines, stay at least 10 metres away (the length of a school bus), and call 911 immediately. To report outages, Alectra Utilities’ customers should call 1-833- ALECTRA (1-833-253-2872).
If you experience a power outage, you can find frequent updates through Twitter channel @AlectraNews or by visiting the outage map on our website: alectrautilities.com.
If the power goes out, Alectra's crews jump into action.
In case you’ve ever wondered how they restore power, the above video helps explain. |

During a winter event, remember not to park on City streets. City Operations can’t easily move around parked cars, making it difficult to clear roads.
|
|
|
|
|
Heavy snowfall and gusty winds can make curbside collection difficult and dangerous. Make sure containers are accessible and kept back from the roadway to help with snow-clearing efforts. For more winter tips visit http://markham.ca/Recycling

|

Winter can be unpredictable. Are you ready? Have an Emergency Car Kit (flashlight, booster cables, vehicle fluids, non-perishable food, bottled water, shovel, & more) in your vehicle, so you are prepared for the unexpected.

Dead or unwanted batteries thrown in the garbage and recycling can cause fires putting people at risk. Drop them off at a York Region waste depot or other battery collection site.

This invasive plant was introduced in the 1800s as a garden ornamental plant. Its aggressive roots can grow through asphalt and concrete (even the foundation of your house, causing costly damage!). Japanese knotweed also creates dense thickets that crowd out native plants.
Protect your property by removing Japanese knotweed from your yard.
Place plants in a tied plastic bag in the garbage. Never put invasive plants in yard waste, your green bin or backyard compost. Even when uprooted, invasive plants can spread seeds or grow roots in compost piles.

Do you know that babies don't need teeth to try and enjoy textured foods?
Providing lumpy, soft-cooked pieces and minced, pureed, mashed, and ground pieces to babies at 6 months of age is a great way to introduce them to new textures.
