As you may know, recent earthquakes have struck Türkiye and Syria, leaving many families without homes and basic necessities. In response to this crisis, Markham Mayor and I are organizing a fundraiser event to raise money for earthquake relief efforts in these countries.

All proceeds will go towards providing aid and support to those affected by the earthquakes. We believe that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact in the lives of those who are struggling in the aftermath of this disaster.

Thank you for your support and generosity.

WARNING TO YORK REGION RESIDENTS
EMERGENCY/GRANDPARENT SCAMS ON THE RISE

Investigators with the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit are once again warning the community of an increase in fraud schemes targeting elderly and vulnerable citizens. York Regional Police has seen an increase in reports from citizens across the region who have reported being a victim of a scam known as the grandparent scam or emergency scam.

As of February 17, 2023, 60 incidents have been reported and more than $350,000 has been lost. Since 2019, the total reported loss for victims in this type of scam is just under $1 million. Investigators believe there may be more victims in our region that have not yet reported to police.

If you have been a victim of a fraud, and have lost money, report the incident promptly to the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit either online at yrp.ca/ReportIt or by calling 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6627. To report frauds where no money has been lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

This is a reminder that all York Region waste depots will be closed on Good Friday, April 7, 2023. Regular operating hours are in effect for the rest of the weekend.
