York Regional Council:

Today is National Day of Mourning in Canada, we remember workers who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness on the job and we commit to protecting worker and preventing workplace tragedies.
As you may know, recent earthquakes have struck Türkiye and Syria, leaving many families without homes and basic necessities. In response to this crisis, Markham Mayor and I are organizing a fundraiser event to raise money for earthquake relief efforts in these countries.

All proceeds will go towards providing aid and support to those affected by the earthquakes. We believe that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact in the lives of those who are struggling in the aftermath of this disaster.

Thank you for your support and generosity.

The City of Markham has undertaken a comprehensive review of its Zoning By-laws and existing zoning framework.

Markham has 46 different ‘parent’ Zoning By-laws applying to different geographic areas of the City. These parent Zoning By-laws were enacted between 1954 and 2004. The City’s By-laws require updating to be consistent with the City’s 2014 Official Plan, the Regional Municipality of York’s Official Plan, Provincial plans and policies, and the Planning Act

The City is required to hold a Statutory Public Meeting prior to passing the By-law. This meeting has now been scheduled to be held on Tuesday May 9, 2023 at 7pm.  It will be a Hybrid/In-Person meeting however; Staff will be in attendance at the Civic Centre to present the By-law, receive input and answer questions.

All meetings are video and audio streamed on the City’s website at: Streaming Link
Members of the public who wish to speak at the Public Meeting through a deputation may do so by:

• completing the Request to Speak form at Request to Speak

York Regional Police is warning the community of an increase in pizza delivery fraud scams.

In a typical pizza delivery scam, a suspect approaches a victim posing as someone who ordered a pizza that has been delivered at the location by a second suspect  posing as the delivery person. The first suspect will ask the victim for help, saying that the delivery person only accepts debit cards and will not take cash. The suspect tells the victim they only have cash on hand, but will give it to the victim if they will do them a favour and pay the delivery person with their debit card.

Upon the victim agreeing, the fake customer gives them cash and the phony delivery person presents the victim with a rigged point-of-sale terminal that records the personal identification number (PIN). At the end of the transaction, a fake, similar-looking card is given back to the unsuspecting victim. The suspects then use the victim’s real card and PIN to make cash withdrawals and/or purchases.

Police are asking the public to be aware of these types of scams and to take steps to protect themselves.

  • Be vigilant during debit or credit transactions
  • Remember that legitimate delivery services accept cash, so if someone tries to convince you otherwise it could be a scam
  • If you think you may be a victim of debit card fraud, contact your bank immediately

To learn more about fraud prevention, visit our website at https://www.yrp.ca/en/crime-prevention/fraud-prevention.asp. If anyone has any questions about pizza delivery scams or scams in general, contact Corporate Communications at 1866-876-5423 ext. 2664.
