Important regional construction project: Highway 404 Road Crossing Improvement Project

In partnership with the City of Markham and City of Richmond Hill, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Transportation, York Region is constructing a new road across Highway 404 and the Rouge River. This new connection between the two municipalities will accommodate growth, provide more travel options, and improve access and connectivity within the area.

Construction will be starting in summer 2023 until fall 2025 and impacts to travellers may include: Lane reductions during off-peak hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Night work and lane closures on regional roads, local roads and Highway 404.

Improvements include:
  • Widening, extending and connecting Orlando Avenue in the City of Richmond Hill and Markland Street in the City of Markham, providing a new four-lane road over Highway 404 and the Rouge River
  • Extending Cachet Woods Court to connect to the newly constructed road crossing
  • Constructing a bridge over Highway 404 and a bridge over the Rouge River
  • Installing sidewalks, multi-use pathways and landscaping
  • Caring for the environment by planting thousands of native trees and plants, stabilizing and naturalizing the river and improving stormwater quality

Yesterday at a Special Council Meeting, members of Markham Council unanimously supported a motion that confirms that the current governance model in York Region needs modernization to meet the current and future needs of the city.

Markham Council agreed to explore all governance options, including reviewing a new single-tier governance model as part of the provincial government’s upcoming regional review process. Markham will retain a consultant to analyze what governance model is best for the city moving forward and will report back at the end of October with a final recommendation.

The provincial government has announced that it will be assigning a regional facilitator to York Region to determine what changes are needed to the current governance model to streamline and expedite decision-making and remove duplication. The consultant report is to be completed in time to be considered in the provincial regional facilitation process.

Spend less time watering your lawn & more time on the fairway. An established lawn only needs 2-3 cm of water per week – watering once a week will encourage deep, strong roots. Creating a low-maintenance yard lets you enjoy what matters most to you. http://york.ca/GrowingTrends
